Second mural project of the year in honor of Fintan Kilbride (1927-2006).
Fintan Kilbride (March 18, 1927 – December 21, 2006) supported Superemos when we began our education and training work in Estelí in 1999. Born in Ireland, Fintan was a Catholic priest and educator working with impoverished communities. As a missionary priest, Fintan was expelled from Nigeria in 1970 following the Biafran War. Later he left the priesthood an settled in Toronto, Canada with his wife Kenise. Fintan was always active on issues of social justice and encouraged his students to have greater awareness of the reality of life for people outside North America around the world.
In Nicaragua, Fintan supported various community programs with great enthusiasm and commitment. Here at Superemos he encouraged us to develop our education and health care programs and fundraised via the Canadian organization Free the Children to enable the construction of a preschool classroom module in 2002. We remodeled those classrooms in January this year, replacing the defective timber structure and adding a second floor. Our art teacher Allan Parrales has painted a mural of Fintan to remind us of his constant help and support prior to his death in 2006. Fintan's example remains an constant inspiration for the continuing development of our community education and health care programs for low income families here in Estelí.
